On the 6th<\/sup> of December the amended Traffic Code regulations on forming a corridor of live and on zipper merge come to effect. Autostrada Wielkopolska with the private concessionaires of A1 and A4 motorway repeatedly appealed for an appropriate regulation to be implemented and adequate education of drivers to be ensured in that scope. Our four years\u2019 efforts finally translated into the regulations which will make road traffic more efficient on the one hand, and help saves lives on the other hand.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Forum Polskie Autostrady Koncesyjne, formed by Autostrada Wielkopolska, Autostrada Wielkopolska II, Stalexport Autostrada Ma\u0142opolska and Gda\u0144sk Transport Company, also set forth the objective purpose of taking up common actions to promote road traffic safety.\u00a0 Motorways and express roads are characterized by high traffic intensity; therefore the obligation to form corridors of life was set as a priority issue addressed by the concessionaires in the scope of their co-operation.<\/p>\n

The amended Traffic Code regulations implement clear rules of forming an emergency corridor, meaning creating a space in a traffic jam to enable rescue services to quickly arrive at the place of incident. Drivers on the motorway or express road are obliged to occupy extreme parts of the carriageway in a defined way. Cars driving in the left lane should pull over to the left hand side of the lane, and the cars driving in the right lane should pull over to the right hand side as far as they can use the emergency lane. In case of three lane motorways, e.g. in the extended Pozna\u0144 bypass, vehicles pull over to the extreme left edge of that lane, and vehicles driving on the remaining traffic lanes pull over to the right hand side, also using the emergency lane. It is important to perform the above manoeuvres before arriving at the traffic jam, and not when already in it. In this way a wide corridor will be formed for emergency vehicles to quickly and safely arrive at the place of incident.\u00a0<\/p>\n

How to correctly form an emergency corridor in the motorway:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. When you see that the traffic is becoming jammed \u2013 pull over to the appropriate edge of the lane.<\/li>\n
  2. Do not wait until you hear the signal of fire brigade, ambulance or police. Pull over at once, leaving the space between cars to let rescue services pass.<\/li>\n
  3. In case the motorway has two lanes, drivers in the left lane always pull over to the left hand side, and drivers on the other lane always pull over to the right hand side using the emergency lane.<\/li>\n
  4. In case of a three lane motorway, drivers in the left lane always pull over to the left hand side, and drivers on others lane always pull over to the right hand side also using the emergency lane.<\/li>\n
  5. A wide corridor formed enables free two-way passage of emergency vehicles to and from the victims of incident.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The observance of the above rules will improve road traffic, and save human lives by reaching victims in danger when each second counts.<\/p>\n

    The right hand principle may help to memorise the simple rule of forming an emergency corridor. When we are looking at our right hand, the thumb represents the cars driving on the left lane, which must always pull down to the left hand edge of the carriageway. The remaining fingers, that is index, middle and ring finger show cars driving in the right lane which always have to the extreme right hand side of the carriageway to form an emergency corridor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

    The second modification implemented by the legislator consists in mandatory zipper merge. Zipper merge applies where it is no longer possible to continue driving in the same traffic lane due to a difficulty or disappearing lane. The driver is then obliged to let pass one car from the disappearing lane. In the situation where on a three lane road only the middle lane may be used to continue driving, the driver in such lane is obliged, directly before the obstacle or the place where traffic lanes disappear, to let one car first from the right, and next from the left hand side, pass before him.<\/p>\n

    In order to assist drivers to correctly form the emergency corridor and zipper merge, Autostrada Wielkopolska and Autostrada Eksploatacja prepared special short instruction films where the Operator\u2019s and the Concessionaire\u2019s employees show the rules of forming an emergency corridor on a two- and three-lane motorway, and the rule of zipper merge. Officers of the Traffic Department of the Police Headquarters in Pozna\u0144, fire fighters from the Provincial Fire Service Headquarters in Pozna\u0144 and paramedics from LUZ MED group took part in performing the film.\u00a0<\/p>\n
