Contractor returns to the Poznań Bypass for spring works

Making the most of the fair weather conditions, Autostrada Wielkopolska S.A. continues the finishing works on the Poznań Bypass. Noise barriers are successively being installed, as are the state-of-the-art traffic protection systems. Even though these works are performed so as not to interfere with the transit traffic, they may still affect the travel times within the Poznań metropolitan area.

According to the Poznań Bypass work schedule, the fact that last December drivers were given access to three lanes of the Bypass, i.e. half a year ahead of the schedule, was not tantamount to the completion of the project. Given mild winter conditions, throughout January and February work on expansion and replacement of noise barriers was continued in locations where the traffic noise protection regulations so required. For the forthcoming weeks works have been planned on the traffic management system which, with ten variable message signs, will provide ongoing information to the drivers regarding the traffic situation on the motorway.

Meanwhile, with the beginning of March, spring works began outside A2 motorway related to the deployment of state-of-the-art traffic security system. At the Poznań – Krzesiny interchange, on the overbridge in the mainline of S11 expressway and district road 433 ( Krzywoustego street) in the direction from Kórnik to Poznań, guard rails are being replaced. Temporary Traffic Organization has been put in place that has excluded parts of the far right lane from operation, which may impede traffic on S11 expressway and on the exit from the southern carriageway of the motorway towards Poznań.

As of Monday, 9 March, works will be transferred onto the median between the carriageways of S11 expressway and district road 433 which will necessitate closing the fast lane on the carriageway from Kórnik to Poznań. The drivers must be prepared to face traffic disturbances on S11 expressway, especially in the morning rush hours. After the works are completed on the Kórnik – Poznań carriageway, the contractor will perform identical works on the carriageway from Poznań to Kórnik which may result in traffic disturbances on the district road 433 during the afternoon rush hours.

– We urge the drivers to be particularly cautious when driving on the overbridge in Krzesiny over A2. Replacement of the guard rails involves dismantling the existing safety infrastructure which used to prevent vehicles from leaving the carriageway. That’s why, for safety reasons, the temporary signage will apply until all guard rail replacement works on that structure are over, explains Michał Pabich, Project Manager on behalf of Autostrada Wielkopolska S.A.

Subsequently, guard rail replacement works will be continued at the interchanges of Poznań Komorniki and Poznań Luboń.

Every day 70 thousand drivers on the average are using the Bypass. The cost of the project amounting to PLN 202 million has been fully financed by the concessionaire. Not a single Polish zloty of subsidies has been expended for the Poznań Bypass extension by Polish taxpayers or the State budget. This project is extremely important to millions of drivers not only in the Poznań agglomeration but also those in transit, as A2 motorway is a major international transportation link between eastern and western Poland.

The construction of the third lane, strengthening of the pavement and upgrade of the infrastructure in the A2 section between the interchanges of Poznań Zachód (West) and Poznań Krzesiny is the first project of such complexity in Poland carried out under traffic. Completion of the project has been scheduled for June 2020.
