In connection with the article in Rzeczpospolita daily published on 2 October 2006 regarding the report of the Supreme Audit Chamber on the construction and management of toll motorways, and in view of numerous references to the project developed by Autostrada Wielkopolska S.A, we wish to clarify the issues which were not fully presented by the press release.
Initially, the works were assumed to commence in 2012. The need to start the second phase works earlier arose in view of the increased heavy traffic compared to the forecasts. This is because of the new vignette system applied on the motorway since 2005.
Road pavement is generally designed basing on the estimated traffic volume, with different variants and in the dozen-years-and-more perspective. For motorways that must have the pavement sustaining 11.5 tons per axle, as in the case of main roads in Europe, it is required to draw up individual pavement designs, in compliance with the applicable laws. In the case of Autostrada Wielkopolska, the phased pavement works to be performed in future years shall be financed from toll revenues.
The initial of A2 Motorway was designed in accordance with the building regulations harmonized with those of the European Union in terms of the permitted load bearing capacity of 11.5 tons per axle.
This April Autostrada Wielkopolska S.A. commissioned an expert report with the Pavement Diagnostics Institute in Warsaw. The report confirms that out of 187 sections tested , as many as 169 were graded the top class “O”.
