Electronic toll collection system on the A2 Motorway managed by Autostrada Wielkopolska

As of 15 January 2025, drivers traveling on the concession section of the A2 between Poznań and Konin will be able to pay tolls using the electronic payment service via video tolling. This state-of-the-art toll collection system uses cameras to automatically recognize vehicle license plates.

Without opening the vehicle window, without the need to hand cash or a pay card, as of 15 January, at selected toll barriers in Nagradowice (km 181 A2), Słupca (km 228 A2) and Lądek (km 238 A2) it will be possible to use an automatic toll collection system based on license plate recognition technology, i.e. video tolling. All you need to do is register your vehicle with the Autopay application and activate the service.

Video tolling is a modern toll collection that uses cameras to automatically recognize vehicle license plates. The system is very efficient and effective from the perspective of the maintenance of the surveillance infrastructure. It guarantees high quality service and reliability while maintaining comfort, safety and a smooth passage. The solution implemented by Autostrada Wielkopolska is fully compatible with the European standard, non-intrusive and interoperable with solutions used by other concessionaires.

Implementation of video tolling on the concession section of the A2 motorway is an expression of the adaptation of the toll collection system to modern standards and the growing expectations of Polish drivers. It will enhance trips on the A2 motorway between Poznań and Konin. We are also ready to implement video tolling on the entire 255 km stretch of A2 between Świecko and Konin, in a formula that is convenient for drivers of all vehicles, both light and heavy. We are discussing this issue with the Ministry of Infrastructure, says Paweł Struski, a member of the Management Board of Autostrada Wielkopolska S.A.

The electronic payment system (video tolling) will operate on the 80-kilometer A2 section between Poznań and Konin. The system’s area of operation is due to differences in the toll systems in place on the two concession sections of the A2 motorway (Świecko – Nowy Tomyśl and Nowy Tomyśl – Konin) and the systems of settlements with the public party.

The section from Świecko to Nowy Tomyśl has a closed toll system, with the funds being transferred to the State budget. The Nowy Tomyśl – Konin section, in turn, is covered by the concession agreement which provides for the real toll system with traffic and revenue risk remaining entirely on the concessionaire. As both settlement systems overlap on the section between Nowy Tomyśl an Gołuski toll plazas, the introduction of a video tolling service has only been possible at toll plazas in Nagradowice, Lądek and Słupca, i.e. east of Poznań. – explains Rafał Popowski, traffic and tolling manager at the company Autostrada Wielkopolska S.A.

The Company is discussing the option to launch video tolling on the 106 km section between Świecko and Nowy Tomyśl with the Ministry of Infrastructure. This would enable the system to cover all toll stations and plazas on both concession sections of the A2 motorway. Regardless of the launching of this new service, trips on the Poznań Bypass (between the Poznań Zachód and Poznań Wschód interchanges) remain toll-free.

  1. How does video tolling work on the Concession?
Vehicle license plate in the application or in the web panel of the video tolling operator (Autopay) – the user creates an account in the Autopay system, links their vehicle license plate number to it and activates the service. For customers already registered with Autopay, all they need to do is activate the A2 video tolling service in the app.
  2. Passing through lanes specially marked with a camera sign – at each toll plaza there will be 2 lanes dedicated exclusively to video tolling and supporting this system. These are the far left lanes with horizontal markings in the form of arrows and a camera, a camera sign on an orange background above the lane, and a symbol of a crossed-out toll collector. The cameras automatically read the vehicle’s license plate when wehicle stops. To pass through these lanes, you must be a user of a system that supports video tolling payments (e.g., be an active user of the Autopay app)

  1. Automatic toll collection – the system debits the user’s account with the appropriate toll amount.

NOTE: drivers who choose traditional payment methods (card, cash, contactless payment, fleet card) should drive in a lane other than those marked with a camera symbol on an orange background.

  1. To register for video tolling, follow a few simple steps:
    Choose your video tolling operator
On the Concession A2 motorway managed by Autostrada Wielkopolska video tolling is supported by Autopay, the most popular platform in Poland, which also operates on the A1 and A4 motorways and toll sections of public motorways, or by selected applications of the banks such as Santander, Millenium, ING, Pekao or Alior. For a full list of third-party applications supported by Autopay, visit: https://mobility.autopay.pl/. It must be noted, however, that for the time being in the A2 section video tolling can only be used via the Autopay app.
  2. Register your account with Autopay:
  3. Download the app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) – it is also possible to register on the web panel of the video tolling operator.
    • Register with your personal data, including your phone number and email address.
    • Add the vehicle license plate number and you pay card details.
  4. Activate the video tolling service
After registering and adding the vehicle, activate the service in the app. You do not need to have any on-board devices – registered license plates are sufficient.
  5. Use the video tolling
    • When you pass through the A2 toll barrier between Poznań and Konin, the cameras will recognize your license plate, and the toll will be collected automatically from your account.
    • You can find information about the trips and tolls charged in the app or on the operator’s website.
  6. Additional Tips:
    • Make sure you have sufficient funds in your account or that your pay card is active.
    • Check whether your vehicle has been correctly registered in the system.
Video tolling is used in many countries around the world, including Poland, where it operates, among others, on selected motorway sections, such as the A1 and A4. It ensures safe and convenient trip and, most importantly, smooth traffic flow – reducing waiting and payment times at the plaza. In addition, which is especially important for fleet drivers – it requires no additional equipment and allows payment by holders of fleet cards approved as a form of payment by the video tolling operator.
